Tyler--  Higher guidelines cause four Tyler schools to fail the federal education standards this year.  As a continuation of the No Child Left Behind Act, the standards are increased.  Now, they are 10 percentage points higher than state standards.

Belle Elementary, Boulter Middle School, John Tyler High School, and Robert E. Lee High School failed to meet them.

Kim Tunnel with Tyler ISD says the performance among special education students caused the high schools to miss the mark.  She says they will continue to do the same thing they have done next year: engage students in their learning and monitor their progress.  She says the standards will continue to get higher until the schools meet the requirements.

Odd how private schools do so well- their administrator/teacher ratio is one fourth of the government run school system !

Exactly who is it that we hold accountable for a failing school system? Teachers, administrators, parents, legislators, politicians or just who?

Could be it is all of us.

What is BEST for students isn't always what is outlined in state and federal standards. State testing has done more harm to the educational process then good. Let's start thinking about what is best for the whole child. It breaks my heart to see students work their very best and then feel like a failure because they can not pass these state mandated tests, and it is the "at risk" students that are suffering the most! It is time to let our legislators know that is has to STOP!

I think we need to move to a year-round calendar. The long summer break is an artifact of when we living in primarily agricultural society and the kids needs to be home to bring in the crops. Slow and steady sticks much better than cramming.

Also, I know this is going to sound like sacrilege to many, I think we should quit putting tax dollars toward expensive team sports--at least until we can pay our teachers a decent wage! Make P.E. class about fitness, self-defense, & maybe Tae Kwon Do.
