Fredonia Community residents lament impending annexation into Kilgore
FREDONIA COMMUNITY, TX — Residents of a 145-year-old community on Kilgore’s northeast tip know they are fighting a losing battle in opposing their annexation into the city.
But Terry Dunn and Robert Morgan Jr., lifelong residents of the hamlet established by freed slaves after the Civil War, along with 20-year homeowner Levi Benner, have gathered about 70 names on a petition asking to be left alone.
“Here we are, boy,” Benner said Thursday morning in Dunn’s dining room, the petition at his elbow. “We’re in a battle with a stick.”
As many as 30 Fredonia community residents spoke out at two public hearings on the annexation this fall, laying out their satisfaction with the countrified lifestyle they’ve loved.
