TEXAS-The growing number of Texas school districts prohibiting teachers from giving students less than a 50 or 60 on their report cards are getting some negative remarks from state lawmakers and teacher groups who want an end to such grading policies.
Sen. Jan Nelson, R-Flower Mound, said she is "appalled" by how many school districts won't let their teachers give students the grades they deserve. Now she's leading a charge to put this to a halt.
Her bill could come up for a vote in a Senate committee as early as this week.
Many school districts across East Texas have minimum grades that can be given to students. In Kilgore ISD no grade lower 50 is allowed.
But if this bill passes it would ban school districts like Kilgore ISD from forcing teachers to assign a minimum grade to failing students regardless of their class work and test scores and instead give them the grade they earned.
