Gladewater ISD gets funding to give free meals to all students
GLADEWATER, TX — No child in Gladewater ISD will go hungry at school during the next four years.
Director of Child Nutrition Darlena Allen said Wednesday that Gladewater ISD has received federal funding, facilitated through the state, that will allow the district to provide free breakfast and lunch to all students for the next four years starting in the 2014-15 school year.
Gladewater ISD serves 1,836 students, of which about 79 percent are considered low-income.
“We are so excited,” Allen said. “With this, you won’t have some kids who feel different.”
The new program — called the Community Eligibility Provision of the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program — eliminates the necessity of the free and reduced lunch program in which students can feel singled out because they have to return applications for the program.
