On Saturday, people in Gladewater will be mobbing a soon-to-be announced business with cash.

Local efforts, led by Gladewater’s Main Street department, are under way to launch a “cash mob” event at 10 a.m. Saturday. Main Street Promotions Chairman Reba Smith said the concept is a tweaked version of a “flash mob” in which a large group of people meet at a designated time and place to create a scene, usually in a high traffic area.

However, in a “cash mob,” the scene takes place at a cash register.

“The targeted business could be struggling due to the poor economy or personal hardships, or it could be a business that has made countless contributions to the community while maintaining a steadfast presence,” Smith said. “Either way, it is an amazing way to help by getting folks involved and getting them to rethink the value of locally owned businesses.”
