Longview, Tx (KETK) — If you depend on GoBus for transportation you could soon be spending more money to hop aboard. The proposed change would double the price of tickets in all 14 counties where GoBus is operated.
The proposed fares would change from $2.00 for a trip within one county to $4.00. Officials are making stops in all 14 counties, which include Gregg, Smith and Rusk.
They held public hearings to hear concerns and comments from residents about the fare hikes. GoBus, which is operated by The East Texas Council of Governments has not had a change in ticket prices since 1997.
With higher gas and operating prices, Director John Meyers says the price increase is really just simple economics.
"Same thing..we buy a loaf of bread..you go buy a car..what was a car's cost in '97..versus what these cars cost now..it's just simple economics..we have to recoup some of the expenses that GoBus expends."
Once the public hearings are over, county commissioners will vote to accept the fare increases or not. If accepted, the new prices will go into effect in October.
