Golf popularity declining
Bullard, TX (KETK) — The number of Golfers in the United States has been declining for years. On Tuesday, even the national retailer, Dick's Sporting Goods, announced they are laying off 500 PGA pro's, after falling short of their golf sale's goals.
This is the trend even here in East Texas. KETK spoke with the Golf Professional at Peach Tree Golf Course, Jaerod Niles, who said, "We're seeing golfing numbers actually are declining. Not just here, but across the nation, worldwide".
Professionals believe this could be a generational issue. Niles said, "We're seeing less and less of the millennium age group, you know they have other things that they need to do". It could also be the time and money the game requires. He explained, "One of the issues with golf might possibly be you know it takes four hours to play a round of golf".
However, the fact remains-- it takes the younger generation's involvement to keep the sport alive. Players like 12-year-old Garrett Bron. Garrett said, "I enj`oy golf because I guess I love feeling that I could play multiple sports at a time. like I used to do baseball and I love to do something new for once". He's only been playing for two months, but believes this a sport everyone can enjoy for a lifetime. Garrett said, "Over the years I'll get better and better and as I get better, then I'll just keep playing".
