A cookout was held on Friday to raise money for Rusk County Lieutenant David Marshall, who recently underwent a lung transplant.

Lieutenant Marshall has to stay in Dallas for three months so he can be close to doctors for check-ups and therapy. The Henderson Citizen's Police Academy held the event to raise money so his family can stay by his side as he recovers.

County officials say their goal was to raise $10,000. Sheriff Jeff Price says he's grateful to be part of such a giving community.

"I'm very thankful and proud of the way the community reacted to this situation. It just shows how much the man is loved and how many people respect him to have the turnout we had and to raise the kind of money we did."

Sheriff Price says Lieutenant Marshall is in good condition and is overwhelmed with the love and support of his community.
