The Caldwell Zoo asked the public to help name three female lion cubs earlier this month. On Monday, zoo officials announced the winning names!

Out of 11 names voted on, the public helped select: Zuri, Amira and Malika. Their meanings are listed below.

  • Zuri - beautiful
  • Amira - princess
  • Milka - angel

A fourth cub, which is male, was named "Doc" is honor of a former veterinarian who died this winter. A fifth cub did not survive birth.

The parent lions are Njeri, donated from the Milwaukee County Zoo, and Ayotunde, by way of the Reid Park Zoo in Tucson.

You can visit the new cubs at the Caldwell Zoo in Tyler located at 2203 W Martin Luther King Jr Blvd. You can call ahead for information at (903) 593-0121.
