YNN/CNN — In upstate New York, a man with down syndrome received a tidal wave of kindness when his mother reached out to social media to make a wish come true.
A Christmas card from nearly every state in the U.S. was delivered to fulfill one man's Christmas wish.
"He was sad one day, all I wanted to do was uplift him," said Elliot's mom. "I said 'Elliot, what is it you want for Christmas this year and he went, 'I just want some cards, Mom."
100 cards to be exact.
Friends and family put the word out on Facebook last Wednesday, not expecting much.
"I thought maybe he might get 35 cards at best," said Elliot's mom. "Within a day, it was reposted from mine at least 25, 26 times. Next thing I know, it's like a flurry and gone viral."
Another 48 hours later, Elliot Shirback's town of Lewiston home was covered which was a sure sign of the power of social media and the christmas spirit.
"It makes me happy inside of me," said Elliot. "It's like a gift, like somebody loves and cares about you."
As of Monday afternoon, it was clear more than 600 people, most of them strangers, cared for the 25-year-old, a number that far exceeded his expectations, but the mailman wasn't finished with his deliveries just yet, and neither were Elliot's fans.
300 hundred cards were in that tray Monday afternoon bringing Elliot's total card count Christmas morning to more than 1,800.
"You are loved," These are words that never rang truer than this Christmas and if there's ever any doubt, Elliot knows where to turn.
