Indianapolis, Inidiana (CNN/WISH) — A pit bull is being called a hero for saving a deaf and sleeping teen from a raging house fire.
A two-and-a-half-year-old pit bull named Ace is getting a lot of attention. He's just like one of the family members and Wednesday afternoon, the dog, who belongs to the Bernard family, became an instant hero.
13-year-old Nick Lamb, who is legally deaf, was sleeping without his cochlear implants inside his home on Perry Pines Court.
"He woke me up because I couldn't hear anything and I was asleep," said Nick. "I looked around my room and I smelled smoke and I could see a little bit of smoke in my room."
The fire department took pictures of the fire when they arrived on the scene and it's clear to see how quickly flames took over the home.
Lamb was in his bedroom on the second floor when Ace woke him up.
Nick says when Ace woke him up, he quickly grabbed one of his two cochlear implants and they escaped.
"I took a breath and I went downstairs with Ace," said Nick. "The whole house was covered in smoke and a little bit of fire."
Even though there is not much left of the home, the Bernard family says they have so much more to be thankful for. And most of all they are thankful for Ace.
