LUFKIN - It was a goodbye to "Good Time Charlie." A community gathers for a memorial service honoring former Congressman Charlie Wilson.

Always a sailor, Charlie Wilson's service included a naval hymn.

The list of accomplishments for the Trinity native included help for veterans, seniors, and early in his career pioneering efforts for civil rights.

Those goals along with creation of the big thicket all over shadowed by his dedication to toppling the soviets in Afghanistan during the Cold War.

On Sunday, those who knew Mr. Wilson personally knew no list could sum up lifetime of friendship, what Wilson called taking care of the "home folk."

"His way of making everyone he met feel important. When Charlie was talking to you, you were the only person in the world. He knew how to make everyone feel important," longtime friend, Buddy Temple, says.
