GOP donors to George P. Bush: Welcome to Washington

GOP donors to George P. Bush: Welcome to Washington
Thursday, May 9, 2013 - 7:45am

Some of Washington's most powerful Republican donors are playing host at a Wednesday evening fundraiser for George P. Bush, a candidate for Texas Land Commissioner and the son of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush

Attendees are paying $500 for the event taking place at the National Association of Wholesale-Distributors Office, according to a copy of the invitation. Among those expected to attend are Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, and Rep. Aaron Shock, R-Illinois.

"I think he is part of the new generation of Republican is very important" to support him, Republican donor Bobbie Kilberg, one of the event's hosts, told CNN. Other hosts include Republican stalwarts Charlie Black, Dirk Van Dongen and Vin Weber.

Bush has been building a major war chest for this race, his first campaign for political office. While it may not be the most high profile job in Texas government, analysts have said it could prove to be a key stepping stone for a major political career down the road for the younger Bush, especially because of his work to broaden the GOP appeal among Hispanics and past military service.

While he has met with Republican activists in Washington before, this is the first official fundraiser here for him. He has also raised money in dozens of events in Texas as well as some in Florida.

Last week his grandfather and grandmother, former President George H.W. and Barbara Bush, hosted a fundraiser for him in Houston, netting $500,000.

Later this month his uncle, former President George W. Bush and his wife Laura, are hosting a major fundraiser in Dallas for George P.'s campaign. The former president has said he wants to do whatever he can to help his nephew. "If George. P. wants to talk to his old uncle and ask for advice, I'm actively advising," George W. Bush recently told The Dallas Morning News. "I've contributed to his campaign, Laura and I have. Beyond that, it depends on what he wants me to do."
