Americans are drinking less milk, a lot less.
And that decline has the dairy industry worried.
There is a crisis in the dairy industry.
People just aren’t drinking milk like they used to.
Consumption is down 30% since 1975.
The Wall Street Journal says, there are various reasons.
One is, there are just fewer kids as a percentage of the population, and children are the highest consumers of milk.
And, people are drinking trendy new things like vitamin water and energy drinks.
And, there’s the fat content and some health concerns.
But the industry says those are misleading and overblown.
We spoke with Tyler Independent School District and it seems we ar bucking the trend.
They say consumption of milk in schools here is high and there is no sign of a trend downward.
But we are the exception, so the dairy folks are getting creative.
Dairy products overall aren’t suffering.
Yogurt and cheese for example, are selling well.
It’s just milk that dropping.
