Grass Fire Keeps Firefighters Busy for Hours

September 6, 2009 - 8:17pm

SMITH COUNTY - A grass fire turned into a several hours' long fight Sunday in Smith County.

Firefighters say it's been the norm this weekend.

Driving down County road 230 in Smith County, over the trees, people could see a big cloud of black smoke.

Closer to the action, it's obvious, firefighters are dealing with a major blaze.

Several East Texas fire departments helped in the effort to control the blaze, even extra equipment was called in.
"We do have a couple of plows out there from Bullard and Troup, they're trying to put a line around it right now," Jeff Bowling from the Chapel Hill Fire Department says.

It took several hours for firefighters to control the fire.

They say people have been out clearing land and burning trash recently.

"It's a holiday, so they can be out working in these fields and around their house," Mr. Bowling says.

Firefighters ask, if you are out burning, please make sure the fires are completely out before you leave.
