Greater Longview United Way will launch its newest initiative, The Beat the Heat Program on Monday, June 4, 2012. The program, designed to provide heat relief to Longview citizens without air conditioning, is carrying forward the project begun last summer by Mayor Jay Dean. Hiway 80 Rescue Mission, Salvation Army, Longview Habitat for Humanity, and JoyGlobal will work together with other volunteer groups to help distribute and install the air conditioning units.
Residents who are elderly (60+), disabled or low income may apply to receive a free 5,000 BTU window unit if they qualify. Only one unit will be allowed per household. Residents or anyone in their household who received a unit in 2011 are ineligible for the program. Preference will be given to Longview residents who are elderly (ages 60 and above) and/or disabled.
Longview residents may call INFOline of Gregg County, 903-236-9211 on Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m to apply while units are available.
