This week, we lost a beloved television icon -- Andy Griffith.

Most knew him best as Sheriff Andy Taylor on the Andy Griffith show...a program many Christians credit for teaching real life lessons.

Sunday morning, David Dykes, pastor of Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler mentioned Griffith toward the end of his sermon on "goodness."

Dykes -- who has watched the show his whole life and seen every episode -- talked about the one where Andy and Helen get stuck in a cave and Barney Fife organizes a rescue.

They manage to escape on their own, but when they heard Barney had gone to so much trouble to help them...they put their dirty clothes back on and got back into the cave so he could "rescue" them.

"Well as I said to our congregation, we lost one of the good guys this week, because he really was a good man.  And all throughout his career, even when he played Matlock, he was always known by the people that worked with him as a good, honest, moral man and was not afraid to let people know he was a follower of Jesus," Dykes told KETK.

Some churches across the nation even do Bible studies using the Andy Griffith show to illustrate.

Pastor Dykes tells KETK, he hopes someday there will be another show like it that teaches strong Biblical morals to families.

I'm sorry to disagree with Pastor Dykes, but Andy Griffith was a promoter of very un-Christian values including abortion, socialism and homosexuality. He played characters on TV shows; he was not being himself. Yes, he made a few gospel records, but only God and Andy know what his motives were for doing those. The real Andy Griffith continued to be a supporter of the progressive agenda (Obama, Bev Perdue, AARP, etc.) until his death. He was as Hollywood as they come - not Christ-like.

Dykes - you should resign and repent - Jesus Christ is the central figure and the
hero of the Church. He is God in the flesh - Andy Griffith is just a mortal man, no more than you and I. Do not assign greatness to an ordinary man who exhalted himself as an actor. Jesus Christ Exhalted Himself as the Creator and God of ALL creation. Paul said, I preach Christ Crucified. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. Go back to the sciptures and LEARN before you aspire to teach, you arrogant ma

I agree that Jesus Christ is the central figure & "hero" of the Church, but sometimes people have to be given examples they can relate to, especially in these modern days. I saw nothing wrong with the mention of a wonderful man who instilled goodness in television. If only we had more shows like that now. Perhaps all these latch key kids would get a better example of morality than they are currently getting from all the nudity, sex and drugs that seem to be the primary focus.
