The Tyler Independent School District has hired a former Baylor golf coach to be the new TISD Athletic Director.

Those jobs usually go to former football coaches in this state.

KETK Sports Director Danny Elzner asked Greg Priest how he did it.

"I'm not sure," Priest said.  "I understand football is the king in Texas."

"We've got to have a strong athletic program but football is going to drive the bus," Priest added.  "We want to make sure that everything else is competitive too."

Priest won national championships in the late '90s as the golf coach at Tyler Junior College.

The Canton native spent the last 11 years as the men's golf coach at Baylor.

"That's a special institution," Priest said.  "The biggest part for me was being part of the greatest turnaround in college athletics, to go from where it started when I first got there to where it is today."

"It all starts with hiring great people," Priest added.  "That's what we've got to try to do here."
