Groundbreaking Scheduled for Longview’s Largest Splash Pad
Longview, TX —
Plans for the newest and largest splash pad in Longview will soon take shape at Lear Park with help from the community. A groundbreaking ceremony for the Jack M. Mann Splash Pad will take place at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 20, 2011, at Lear Park, 100 H.G. Mosley Pkwy. With a completion goal of summer 2012, the splash pad facility will include a covered pavilion, restrooms, parking lot, and a state of the art splash pad with three play areas.
The City of Longview has contributed $250,000 to construct the infrastructure for the splash pad. To enhance the splash pad with additional features, the PALS Foundation, a 501-C-3 organization, hopes to raise $250,000 from the community by December 31, 2011. Already, more than $70,000 has been donated. According to Jack Mann Splash Pad Fundraising Chairman Les Rickett, “We need donations from the community to help make this dream a reality. We already have a great start, but with help from donors we can turn a standard splash pad into a regional destination park unlike any other in East Texas.”
According to Director of Community Services Laura Hill, “The Jack M. Mann Splash Pad is going to be a very exciting project. Longview’s three splash pads at Broughton, Stamper, and Spring Hill parks have proven to be immensely popular. Building a much larger facility at Lear will not only provide a wonderful amenity for our citizens, but it also will be a tremendous benefit for the many visitors to the community that come to Lear Park for tournaments. We hope to open the splash pad by the summer of 2012, but we will need help from throughout the community to get there.”
The splash pad is named in memory of Mr. Jack M. Mann, a Longview resident that had a long history of supporting numerous events, programs, and organizations throughout Longview. Jack M. Mann served as president of the Made-Rite Company since 1971. The company has been distributing Dr. Pepper in the East Texas area since 1925. The Mann family and the Dr. Pepper / Snapple Corporation have kicked off the fundraising campaign with a generous gift towards the project.
All donations are greatly appreciated. Donor recognition is available through leveled giving and/or sponsorship of park assets. The target date for having funds committed is December 31, 2011. Donations may be made to the PALS Foundation, PO Box 2761, Longview, Texas, 75603.
