A security guard fatally shot a man Wednesday who appeared to be stealing a pickup at an apartment complex in north Houston, police said.

The guard opened fire after confronting two men about 3:30 a.m. in the parking lot of the Magnolia Cove apartments, at 103 Goodson near Airline, according to the Houston Police Department.

Two guards, who work for Spartan security company, were patrolling the complex when they saw the two men driving in a white pickup truck with a broken door handle, said HPD Homicide Investigator Brian Evans. The guard ordered the men to stop, Evans said.
