A cheer gym in Tyler is doing something a little different this year. They are starting a team for kids with special needs and hope they can enter into competitions with them . Gym Tyler has been looking at special needs teams at cheer competitions for the past 4 to 5 years and they wanted to implement it into their program.

Now, one of their cheer coaches 3 1/2 year old daughter has down syndrome. They knew it was time to form this type of team.

"It's close to our heart and we wanted to make sure we did the program right and so we really thought about it, prayed about it and talking to other gyms about it and how they do it," said owner of Gym Tyler Kim Johnson.

They had a free clinic and invited the UT Tyler cheerleaders to help.

" We taught them some jumps, motions and had the UT Tyler cheerleaders come in which they just thought it was the bees knees to have them here," said cheer coach Tara Mchan.

"We weren't sure how many we would actually have in Tyler, but there is obviously a big need for it," said Johnson.

They said the looks on their faces, while practicing, was priceless.

"They might not have done everything perfectly, but they gave heart to everything they did today," said Johnson.

Gym Tyler coaches want to continue this team and make them part of the Twisters family and enter into those competitions they found inspiration from in the Fall.

"There was one little girl that emailed Tara on Monday and said the excitement on her face just brought tears to her eyes the whole time she was here," said Johnson.
