The 30th annual Smith County Hay Show will kick off on september 22nd, the first monday of the East Texas State Fair. All entry samples should be submitted on the 14th or 15th of August, at 1 of the 8 locations within the county.

Chad Gulley with the Texas Agrilife Extension Service said the samples are tested in a lab for proteins and nutritional value.

"We have producers around the county that produce hay samples, we may get 100-125 samples on a yearly basis. We collect them, send them to the Texas A&M University Hay Testing Lab, they analyze the hay samples, and they send us the results back," he said.

The hay is then auctioned off at the fair, with proceeds going to scholarships for students.

"If we can help them with their education, in whatever their chosen field is, we can help them get on the right foot and get the right path going," he added.

And the fundraiser has been a huge success.

"We've probably raised half a million dollars, in the past thirty years," said Darin Smith, a district conservationist.

The "Howdy neighbor" BBQ will also take place at the show, and the event is family friendly.

"It offers a lot to our community as part of the East Texas State Fair," said Chad Gulley.
