What is the swine flu?

Experts say much of the panic is stemming from people not knowing exactly what the swine flu is and how to prevent getting it.

Experts say their main concern is preventing more sickness in the U.S. And they want Americans to know that this year's flu shot will not protect you.

The swine flu is most often found in pigs, experts say. But what's different about the current cases is that people aren't getting the virus from contact with pigs, but instead from human-to-human contact.

Health officials say this is a new strain of the flu that is a combination of swine, bird and human viruses.

Local health officials held a press conference Monday to reassure that they are taking this virus seriously and want East Texans to not panic.

"The concern about this flu is the vaccinations that we've been giving to date are not effective against it," Dr. Johnathan McClements said.

Doctors say you can protect yourself by washing your hands and covering your coughs and sneezes.
