TYLER - Emotions are running high as election day gets nearer. There's some controversy about the proposed $90 dollar T.I.S.D. bond proposal.
The latest disagreement is about the possibility of moving Rice Elementary. earlier Friday as i was interviewing Steven Kueck, who started a political action committee against the bond issue-- some angry parents walked up and confronted him.
Since both sides make the argument on the issue better than we even could we decided to show you the dust up unedited. Click the video above to watch.

Why would anyone not want to spend money on education? I can't think of anything better. Clearly many folks are more concerned with holding on to their money rather than spending it to benefit their community and children. If you have 1,000 students to educate, then a 1,000 capacity school is the way to go. Tyler is an increasingly rare community with decent public schools. Do whatever is necessary to keep them. Good to see parents standing up for school improvement.
You should know that Steve Kueck & his late wife, SueEllen were responsible for putting the 1st VoteYes PAC together to support the building of new schools in Tyler. They have done so much for the needs of children & the school board even dedicated the couryard at Jack to his wife when she died. I know it is hard for Steve to put "Why Relocate Rice" together but he wanted people to be aware that this bond is not in the best interest of the community & Rice students
Mr. Kueck has a right to share his platform on his own front yard. He does not have a right to stand in front of Rice School saying or implying that he represents Rice parents. His views are quite opposite of the majority of Rice parents. Rice PTA(parents of Rice children)voted to support this bond 100%. Mr. Keuck is not a member of the Rice PTA, has no children at Rice, and obviously has not been listening to TISD plans created by paid professional consultants.Go moms for setting him straight!
If I felt that a new building would ensure the educational future of tomorrows' citizens then, I would be first in line to vote "yes", but the facts are; new buildings don't make better students or lessen drop-out rates. The evidence of this truth has been proved many times. The United States spends far more per student than any other country in the world yet, we rank 19th in educational standards. More money has never been the answer for student success. Common sense makes me vote "NO".
TISD meetings absolutely spelled out what $ would be used for. Bottom line, we want what's best for our kids and Tyler has GOT to step up and take responsibility for the condition of it's schools. We have done so well. We have elementary schools now that are wonderful facilities. I am proud to drive by them knowing that we had something to do with them. Our votes counted. Why are we throwing Rice under the bus? We need to continue the job we started. We can't stop now. Too costly for our youth.
I have been to 3 different meetings regarding the TISD bond and have not seen Mr. Kueck at any of them. The deceptive methods used by Mr. Kueck (implying he is a Rice parent) makes me question the other "facts" he has given the public. If he had attended those meetings, he would know that moving Rice is 1 option but there are 2 options where Rice stays in the same location. He would also know why any possible locations of Rice have not been announced & what may be done with the current building.
For the record, Steve did more than plant trees, he & his late wife worked tirelessly on the 2004 & 2008 bond elections. In the past, these did not pass but with his hard work with others, we have new schools. The reason he is against the bond now--there is not a plan with what to do with Rice. I think the taxpayers deserve to know if Rice will be rebuilt at a new location or not. Please no personal attacks on one another. This forum should be used to discuss ideas, not insult one another.
These ladies have been to the PTA meetings. They do realize that relocation is a possibility. Those for the Bond just want what is best for the students. Children were on the premises; the parents would ask that the media hold their interviews and filming until school is dismissed.

This is wonderful to see parents stand together against those in the community who oppose moving forward and ensuring the future of our children. EDUCATION first, not land values and selfish ideals.
Can you imagine your mother acting as these two women did? I know times have changed, but these "mothers" are the postermoms of what dignity and refinement aren't. Combative, bullyish, and with the air of authority, these concerned mothers made absolute fools of themselves. I suspect that the husbands of these "Mutt and Jeffs" are thouroughly embarrassed after seeing this on TV. With attitudes like these, I hardly think these moms are qualified to raise rabits much less children.
Way to go Rice Elementary mom Amy DeWalch! Steve has absolutely no argument except for the trees that were planted on Old Bullard Road. Unfortunately trees don't last forever but the young minds of our youth do. They deserve better in Tyler Texas that an outdated, overcrowded facility. There are beautiful new elementary schools in Tyler now and we are very proud of them. Why does Rice have to suffer for the sake of
pot bellied argumentative old men?

Steve Kueck was one of the original three people to put together the Vote Yes for the 2004 & 2008 TISD Bonds. He has done more than plant trees. He & his late wife worked tirelessly to put together a bond that had not passed in previous years. Thanks to him & others, that is the reason TISD has the new schools it has now. He was one of the main planners. The reason he is against this now is due the fact that there are not questions being answered. Personal attacks are unnecessary.
susan, you are smarter that this! it's simply about being informed and knowing what is being voted on...which right now is ambiguous. no one has ever argued the need, just asking to be done in prudent & accountable manner. it's disappointing these ladies felt it is OK to have an opinion about what is best for their families but others are not able to do the same. just a note before slinging mud, i could see two uneducated "pot bellied women" who where very rude in interrupting that interview!
These two ladies have obviously not gone to the PTA meeting where the bond was discussed. If they had, they would know that the chances of relocating Rice is a real probability. Just because someone no longer has a child attending Rice does not mean they do not have a say in what happens in this election. TISD needs to be up front with what will happen to this location. KETK should have shown this first part of the interview to the public....they need to be informed.
After learning that former mayor and now state senator Eltife was a large contributor to the "Vote Yes" campaign, and in light of the ambiguity to the location of the planned project, citizens of Tyler should demand a formal statement from Eltife that he will in no way profit or benefit from the location selected. This should include, but not be limited to, land sales or the promise of future campaign donations from developers.
