Henderson Animal Shelter is breaking records. They said it is thanks to Facebook and hardworking people. It is good news for our furry friends at the shelter because they found homes for more than 1,000 animals this year so far. Veronica Whittington runs the shelter.

"Our goal this year was 900, and we always dreamed of getting 1,000," said Whittington.

It was the first time in thirty years that the shelter reached so many adoptions.

"We've just done so good, and its been a long time coming," said Whittington.

In 2000, the shelter adopted out 102 pets. This year, they have found 1,018 homes for the pets so far.

"A lot of things has helped us here. With the donations and the volunteers that I have, we've been able to keep the animals longer," said Whittington.

The animals have the chance to stay longer than the city required minimum. Kathy Hamlet has been volunteering at the shelter for eight years.

"Cats [are] my passion. I got 14 at home," said Hamlet.

Hamlet cleans the cages, and she changes the food, water and litter.

"I just enjoy animals," said Hamlet.

"To take this shelter from doing 100 adoptions a year to doing 1,000 adoptions a year, it takes a little extra work. It takes your volunteers and your donators. You definitely can't do it on your own," said Whittington.

Volunteers also created a Facebook page for the shelter.

"I think the Facebook page is what helped hit that thousand mark," said Whittington.

A volunteer posts pictures of adoptable animals on the page. She also shares adoption stories.

"I work here because I make a difference," said Whittington.

The shelter hopes to find at least 150 more homes for the animals this year.
