More than 100 people came out Tuesday to pay respect to a living legend of Henderson.

Elmer Hill, the second-oldest living World War II veteran and pillar of education for the city of Henderson, received the keys to the city during a ceremony at Emeritus Senior Living facility Tuesday afternoon.

“We are here today to honor Henderson’s own living legend,” Mayor Pat Brack said. “I can’t thank you enough for helping to honor this man today. He represents so many people. He is a man of impeccable integrity and a true giant in Rusk county.”

Hill received a standing ovation from the crowd of people in attendance, which included his children, Audrey and Ray; former students; and Northeast Texas congressman Louie Gohmert.
