High schools are dealing with shortage of teachers

LONGVIEW - A study from the University of Texas shows there's a need for math and science teachers across the state.

The shortage of high school science teachers has jumped to more than 80% which is the biggest jump since 2004.

The new high school graduation requirements, call for students to take more math and science classes and it's making it harder for schools to find qualified teachers.

Longview ISD Spokesperson, Brian Bowman said, "Now the state has made it to where they have to have an extra year of science and that's a few extra teachers and its made it a burden more so now for school districts in Texas to hire certified math and science teachers."

He says there are openings every year for people willing to teach both math and science.

School districts have ignored the discipline problems in middle and high schools long enough that teachers have decided it is no longer worth the hassle! That is why there are shortages!
Until students know that unruly and disruptive behavior will absolutely not be tolerated and that where appropriate, charges will be filed; then, and only then after it has been demonstrated over time that a school district has control, they will find teachers willing to enter their classrooms.
