High speed chase in Smith County
March 8, 2009 - 10:26pm
SMITH COUNTY-Three men took Smith County deputies on a high speed chase Sunday evening. The chase started just after 6:30 p.m. on Interstate 20 just past the Highway 271 exit.
Smith County deputies tell us the chase lasted a little over 20 minutes, but during that time shots were fired and lives were at risk as deputies tried to stop the three suspects.
Deputies working the interstate attempted to pull over the silver Dodge Charger. Just as the deputy thought the vehicle was pulling over, the driver hit the gas and took off. The men drove eastbound down I-20 and second later took the exit ramp onto 271 to get back on the interstate heading in the opposite direction. During the chase both the officers and people in that car exchanged gun shots. The driver also tried to run one of the deputies' cars off the road. Deputies managed to stop the vehicle but all three subject bailed out. Two of the men were caught immediately. The third man was eventually caught after a foot chase. Smith County Sheriff's were able to confirm the three men did have drugs on them and the silver Dodge Charger was stolen from Tennessee.
The men are being held at the Smith County Jail. Their names have not yet been released.

Kudoos to our brave officers for getting trash off our highways. We must give them the ultimate respect for the job that they do every day to protect our citizens.
