Historic Old East Mountain Cemetery due for restoration

Tall grass and weeds hug the headstones at Old East Mountain Cemetery, a sad sight for Tony McCullough and several other volunteers determined to restore the Upshur County cemetery that dates to the early 1800’s.

McCullough, whose parents are buried in the cemetery on Robin Road, said in years past the grounds were kept immaculately.

“This cemetery used to be just beautiful,” he said. “It was like a park out here.”

Cathie Baker Tehan, who took over as primary care-taker of the cemetery this year, said the first step to restoration will take place Saturday and volunteers are needed to assist in improving the grounds.
