Historic Preservation Commission talks saving T.G. Field
Longview, TX — Longview’s Historic Preservation Commission on Tuesday discussed ways to save the historical T.G. Field Auditorium, including the possibility of having an entertainment district downtown.
“It is important to Longview,” commission Chairman Gerald Bratz said. “We already lost the high school that was to the south of it. Pretty soon we could lose that, and it is just an open lot again.”
The commission began considering measures to save the auditorium after a Longview ISD bidding process failed to secure a buyer. Longview ISD Assistant Superintendent Lynn Marshall said in March that a “repurposing plan” for the district could include demolition because the costs of maintaining the large structure are too great for the district to bear long-term.
The Longview ISD board of trustees has not formally decided what action to take on the property, which has been home to countless shows during its history.
“I don’t think the district is real antsy to move forward with that ... but at the same time, it is a liability to them, and they are ready to unload it. I can understand that,” Bratz said of the possible demolition.
