Home canning is making a comeback, even though some say it never really went away.

The old-fashioned trend is one that could help save you money.

If you have seen more of these supplies in grocery stores lately, it's because of an increase in demand.

Those who are willing to spend some time can save some serious money.

"You pay a premium price for organic. But if you're doing your own it's a whole lot cheaper," said Lyn Deardorff, canning class instructor.

The proper heating and sealing techniques can keep out bacteria, even if preserves are stored for a year or more, and do not contain preservatives or chemicals.

The USDA changed its guidelines for canning temperatures and techniques in 1990.

Deardorff advises not to use cookbooks and recipes written before then, because they might not be as safe as modern ones.
