Three family pets were killed and a home was lost after lightning struck a Smith County house Monday morning.

At around 9:15 am., the Smith County Fire Marshal's Office received reports of a loud boom and black smoke coming from a home off County Road 1140 on County Road 1222, or Lisa Jean Road. Neighbors also told fire officials the ground and windows shook following the strike.

Responding firefighters arrived to three-fourths of the house engulfed in flames. Neighbors stated it appeared the fire began in the garage area and spread through the attic. Crews did find one dog injured, but a local vet was not able to save it. Two others dogs could not be found and were assumed killed by the blaze.

Firefighters were able to put out hotspots about two to three hours after the strike.

A vehicle was also destroyed in the garage. The homeowners stated they did have family members to house them.
