Homeowners call Cherokee County Highway 'dangerous '
CHEROKEE COUNTY - Highway 79 is a stretch of road cutting right through East Texas, but one portion outside of Jacksonville, in Cherokee County has homeowners in the area concerned.
One homeowner tells KETK, "Through the years I've seen wrecks come and go."
Some concerns include high speeds, and drivers on the phone, and they say the result has been injury and death. The most recent accident on Highway 79 occurred this weekend near County Road 3209. Pieces of car still dot the highway for an accident that claimed the life of four individuals.
"When my daughter got off the bus, one day when she was little she was getting off the school bus out here and they don't even stop for the school bus", one homeowner says.
Perhaps the most surprising danger, homeowners told KETK, wasn't necessarily the drivers, it was the animals.
"One thing is people are just tying their horses on the side of the highway down here."
As outlandish as it may sound just a short drive down the highway, KETK found a donkey tied up just feet away from the highway. Homeowners say until law enforcement cracks down, accidents could continue, and it's only a matter of time before highway 79 claims another victim.
