Horses Compete for the Cause

June 7, 2009 - 10:15pm

TYLER-Several dozen miniature horses put their best hoof forward this weekend at the Miniature Horse Show. And all the proceeds went to help some of their cousins.

The world's smallest breeds of horses strutted their stuff this weekend at the Texas Rose Horse Park for a good cause. Due to the declining economy, the Safe Haven rescue non-profit organization has fallen on hard times financially and these tiny horses were happy to lend a hand or hoof for that matter.

Texas Tornado is one of the 22 horses that were rescued a few short weeks ago by Safe Haven after not being cared for properly. When we first met him he was living in a barn that had feces covering the floor inches deep. His coat was matted and every step he took was painful because his hooves had never been trimmed.

But fast forward to now after several weeks of rehabilitation from the volunteers at Safe Haven he is almost unrecognizable.

For the past few months the organization has seen the number of cases they've taken on sky rocket. And the sheer amount of cases has almost depleted their funds.

So the help this non-profit and horses like Texas Tornado, a few of their miniature friends and their owners have decided to help. A portion of the Miniature Horse Show's proceeds went to Safe Haven.

"This is a big break for us because and we really need the help because were running low on feed, hay, everything," Safe Haven Director Richard Fincher said. "God's blessed us so much."

More than 100 miniature horses participated in the event this weekend and competed for titles in 121 different classes.

But what's nicer is horses helping other horses survive.

If you would like to help Safe Haven you can call the organization's office at (903) 762-1432 or go to www.safehavenequinerescue.com.
