Houston officer gets prison for prostitute's rape
HOUSTON — A 26-year-old Houston police officer fired after raping a prostitute while on duty has been sentenced to six years in prison for the crime.
Prosecutors say Demetrie Trevail Dixon will have to serve at least three years of the sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
The Houston Chronicle reports that, in closing arguments, prosecutor Matthew Peneguy asked the Harris County jury to assess the maximum 20-year prison sentence for "using the badge to coerce" sex.
Defense attorney Bill Stradley asked jurors to order probation, saying, "We don't need to warehouse this guy; he needs help."
Jurors deliberated two hours Tuesday before agreeing on the sentence after finding him guilty Friday of sexual assault.
