It turns out a random act of kindness by a Houston Police officer wasn't so random after all.

On any given day in downtown Houston, there are dozens of people on the street, living and trying to make a living. Look a little closer and you might also see people lending a helping hand.

A photo shows a Houston Police Department officer giving a homeless man a jacket on a very cold day.

This is Sgt. Wick. He's the officer in the photo.

Turns out it's his job every day, looking for people he can help. He leads the homeless outreach program.

"I'm thinking he's cold, and I'm thinking he needs some clothes. And I have the ability to get them for him, so that's what I did," said Wick.

The streets are his second home.

"I spend more time with the folks on the street than with my own family. I mean they're my street family," said Wick. "They're broken, and they have different problems with different people and you just need to find out, figure out what they need and try to help them get it."

As long as there are people on he street down on their luck, you'll probably find Wick right there with them.

Need more people like Wick, there are always people in need and its nice to see people willing to help. It may be his job, but he had to really care about people to take the job. Restores your faith in humanity. I saw a sign in front of a church years ago that read " God helps people through people ", so when you help someone you are helping the Lord help others and I actually believe it puts a smile on the Lords face. Good to see a cheerful story for a change.
