TYLER — If you grow your own produce, you may have noticed the bugs eating away at your fruits and veggies.

Tim McCellon built his own greenhouse about three months ago to save money on groceries.

"We'll be able to feed our family out of our backyard, which I think is pretty cool," he said.

But they're running into a bit of a problem, though.

"We only had a couple of strawberries that were edible," McCellon said. "The bugs got the rest of them."

Corey Buckley's family has been going produce for generations.

He says this year, bugs will definitely be an issue.

"We've had a mild winter and with the recent rain insects do seem to be out," Buckley said of Buckley Farms in Flint.

Buckley says a little organic insecticide will help, just make sure it's a safe one and isn't hazardous to eat.

Many avid gardeners say planting marigolds will also keep certain critters away.

McCellon did get one tip for his strawberry problem.

He heard ladybugs will do the trick.

Buckley says sometimes bugs are inevitable and the best tool is diligence.

"I would leave them alone and just see if they come out of it," he said. "If they've got insect damage, just see if they come out of it. The plant will keep growing and it might be fine."
