Hurricane season is underway and cities are getting better prepared
(CNN) — Hurricane season is underway and cities along the gulf and east coasts say they are better prepared this year.
USA Today is reporting that New York City and Miami used updated storm surge information from the National Hurricane Center to create new evacuation maps and zones.
In New York City those zones include 37 percent of its population, an 8 percent increase from the previous evacuation zones.
In Miami, 1.9 million people are included instead of 600,000.
Experts say all hurricane evacuation maps are based entirely on flooding from storm surge and not from wind or rain triggered flooding.
