Insurance companies checking out your Facebook?

Facebook -- where billions worldwide broadcast their lives.

Experts on an AOL financial website say before long insurance companies may start using using your Facebook or Twitter to learn what kind of financial risk they're taking by selling insurance to you - sort of like a "social media score."

Wendy Vanderwater with Threlkeld Insurance in Tyler says she wouldn't be surprised if they are already doing it.

"I do believe the insurance companies will do whatever it is they need to to make sure there's not fraud in the claim or thoroughly investigate an insured prior to issuing a policy," Vanderwater said.

So if you try to pass yourself off to an insurance company as a homebody -- but yet your public Facebook account has a video of you skydiving, you may be in trouble.

"You know, if you turn yourself in as a relatively conservative person, but yet you have these daredevil tendancies...well that's not a very good risk for an insurance company," Vanderwater said.

Vanderwater says the major insurance companies have already been doing investigations like that for years -- social media is just a new avenue for it.

East Texan Ben Mathis is an avid Facebook user.  He doesn't agree with using social media to gather information on people, but he says he can see how insurance companies can see it as fair -- just under one condition.

"They need to make it well aware to all the clients that they can use your Facebook information and I guess Facebook users just need to be careful what they put on their Facebook," Mathis said.

Vanderwater also tells KETK, insurance companies most likely don't have the manpower to check everybody out -- it's mainly with high risk insured or high dollar benefits.
