TYLER - Judson Metro Fire Captain Tom Keith visits East Texas Live to talk about seasonal fire safety.

Keith says there are more fires in the winter than any other time of year, because people are trying to stay warm. They begin using space heaters and overload or incorrectly use extension cords.

Keith says unattended cooking, candles and misuse of electrical outlets and extension cords are the most common causes of fires in East Texas.

To stay safe, he suggests avoiding distractions in the kitchen, keeping candles attended and having a fire extinguisher nearby. Keith also says every household should have a fire escape plan.
