Tyler, Texas (KETK) — Spring time in East Texas means pollen makes it's annual appearance, dusting the ground and everything on it with a pale yellow glow. James Wilhite, owner of Wilhite Landscaping, is no stranger to plants or pollen, "You know it's spring in East Texas when you look up and the pine trees are emitting yellow smoke and they're not on fire." Wilhite says, "Pollen in East Texas is just part of the deal."
Right now tree pollen counts are considered 'high' which means those who are allergic will likely feel symptoms. "The tree pollen is quite high, the mold is low...right now we have pine and oak among other tree pollen that's really high out there, anyone that is extremely sensitive is going to have a problem, and that's why you have the sneezing, the coughing the itchy trout the watery eyes." KETK Meteorologist Robert Thornton said. Although the pollen wreaks havoc on our allergies, some local businesses profit for the fallen pollen. Ed Starks, owner of Ed's car was and detail said he see's about a 30 percent increase in business this time of year, "The pollen has fallen! And that brings in more people to get the stuff rinsed off or washed off." said Starks.
