Tyler TX — It's that time again, deer season kicks off statewide this Saturday. We spoke to experts who say Texas hunters should expect to see deer in good condition. Texas Parks and Wildlife says last year's deer were in fair shape after the drought, but with this year's rainfall the stage is set for a good season
Some would say Texas deer season is a holiday that last for three months. TPWD Game Warden, Chris Swift, says, "It's huge its been around forever, it's more tradition than anything I think." North Texas deer season runs from November 3rd to January 6th. "I think it's a big transition people haven't been fishing since the Summertime," said Swift.
TPWD states that despite last year's drought, the deer population faired ok, but this year's rainfall set the stage.
Swift said, "We're going to have a healthy heard of deer this year."
Firearms supervisor, from Gander Mountain in Tyler, tells KETK rifle sales are always up this time of year especially the 700 BDL.
Vance Wyly said, "In black synthetic comes with a scope 3x9 Remington scope by 40, this particular rifle is in 308, again it's going to be more than enough knock down for anything locally." He says half of making sure you're going to get a good clean kill is making sure you're hunting with an appropriate caliber, but at the same time having the right ammo. Wyly said, "Ammo that's expansion rate is going be good and going to preform to a way so that it doesn't pierce right through but that it does damage upon impact."
So, whether you're hunting for fun or for food both firearm specialist and game warden agree on their favorite part. "Really just getting to spend time with family," Wyly said. "Going to the deer camp and being with family," Swift said.
Swift also said to visit the Texas Parks and Wildlife website for antler regulations, "doe-day" rules, and licensing. Their website is:http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/
