Jack Stallard is the Sports Editor of the Longview News-Journal.

KETK Sports Director Danny Elzner asked Stallard about the upcoming season opener between Longview and Lufkin.

Longview will play at Lufkin Friday night.

Stallard said...

"This is a great rivalry. This will be the 75th meeting between these two teams and the series is tied. Both teams have won 35 games and there have been four ties.

These teams always go deep in the playoffs. It should be a great game.

Longview went 11-2. They're banged up right now. They'll be without running back Jamycal Hasty and one of their best defensive players Omar French. Those kids are out indefinitely. They won't play Friday night.

Dezmond Chumley is returning. He'll be a three-year starter at quarterback. He's thrown for 3,700 yards, 47 touchdowns and just nine interceptions. They should be able to move the ball.

Lufkin has great athletes all over the field. KeKe Coutee had 77 catches last year for a thousand yards. There will be a lot of offensive potential in this game. It should be a great matchup."
