Authorities are investigating what appears to have been a suicide in Houston's central jail. Houston police say 30-year-old Robert Gomez took off his T-shirt and used it to hang himself from his jail cell bars about two hours
after his Saturday night arrest for public intoxication.

The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences will determine the cause of death.

Police say Gomez, who was combative when he was arrested, was medically screened and cleared by medical personnel before he was taken to an individual cell where he could be seen by other prisoners.

Jail personnel say they provided first aid but it was too late. Police say the in-custody death is being investigated by their homicide unit and internal affairs division.
