SMITH COUNTY - Thursday, we sat down with the Smith County Sheriff.
He told us why he thinks the jail proposal is a good plan.
Now, a group against the plan responds.
David Stein says, "You can't stop everybody from saying things they want to say on both sides and all sides of the issue."
There are two sides- those for the proposed jail..
Sheriff J.B Smith says, "I've seen lots of plans in 30 years and this is undoubtedly the best plan i've ever seen."
Then, there are those against it..
Stein says, "It's not about scaring people into voting no. It's not about trying to trick people into different things. That's not what people with integrity do."
On Thursday, Smith County Sheriff J.B. Smith for the first time spoke publicly about his feelings on the jail bond proposal.
He said he's sick of the un-truths being told about a jail that's critically needed here in Smith County.
Sheriff Smith says, "If they want public safety, they'll have to pay for it."
If voters say yes to a new jail, it'll cost 125-million dollars.
It includes all of it- from the new jail, to renovations of the old jail, even everything inside.
Sheriff Smith says, that's it!
Those who oppose it, don't believe that.
They say they deserve to see an itemized list of what exactly they'll be paying for.
Those who oppose it say add in the interest and you're paying more.
And they say if there's a need for expansion, county leaders will probably have to start from scratch.
Still, Sheriff Smith stands firm.
Sheriff Smith says, "If we need to build on. We can do it."
Stein says, "I think what he does is address the need and i don't think anyone disputes the need."
Sheriff Smith says,"it's not my job to build the jail. It's the Sheriff's job to run the jail"
This debate will ultimately be in the hands of voters.
Early voting begins October 22nd.
