TYLER - TYLER ISD issues the following news release:
John Tyler High School Begins Day
As staff and students returned to school the day after events unfolded on campus and Special Education teacher, Mr. Todd Henry, tragically died, the Tyler Independent School District is assisting the campus in meeting their emotional and safety needs.
District Administrators held an early morning meeting with all campus staff to discuss the events which occurred and explain the plan that is in place today. Counselors have been brought in from across the District to visit with each first period class to give students an opportunity to address their feelings. They are also available throughout the day if any student needs additional support. Counselors are present to assist staff members as well.
Additional security is visible. All Tyler ISD police officers are located at John Tyler High School today, as well as four City of Tyler Police officers and six Smith County officers.
Principal, Dr. Carol Saxenian, began the school day with a moment of silence to remember beloved teacher, Mr. Henry. Dr. Saxenian reassured students that what occurred yesterday was an unforeseen isolated occurrence and that this situation was not associated with any other incident. All reports suggest that it was a random act by an individual student.
The school District is providing additional security measures that will continue for the foreseeable future.
The Tyler Independent School District will share additional information and address safety and security concerns later today.
