Jones Park pool to close early
Shortage of lifeguards forces closure this Sunday
Lufkin — After this weekend, kids in Lufkin will have one less place to stay cool from the blistering summer heat.
City officials announced that the Jones Park pool will close for the season after Sunday.
Jason Arnold, the Lufkin Parks & Recreation department’s assistant director, said that after all attempts were made to keep the pool open, it will close because of a shortage of lifeguards.
“We have this issue every year, which is actually why it didn’t open last year. It’s just tough to find lifeguards. The certification classes are somewhat difficult to pass,” Arnold said. “One of the lifeguards is a football player at Texas A&M-Commerce and he has to report for camp. We can’t run it with one lifeguard for safety reasons. We have to have two and we would like to have three or four on staff.”
Otherwise, Arnold said, they had a successful and busy season, which included offering pool parties.
