Jury enters 3rd day of deliberations in Gosnell abortion case
Philadelphia, PA (NBC News) — Jurors are deliberating for a third day in the murder trial of Philadelphia abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell.
Gosnell is charged with first degree murder in the deaths of four babies that were allegedly born alive.
The 72 year old has been in custody since his arrest in 2011.
Gosnell's lawyers have argued that there were no live births at the Women's Medical Society clinic, but prosecutors argue that Gosnell routinely killed live babies because he did not know how to perform a proper abortion in the womb.
A 2011 grand jury report shows that officials found deplorable conditions inside the facility, including filthy patient rooms.
Prosecutors also said that Gosnell used untrained staff to help perform abortion procedures.
Dr. Gosnell is also charged with third degree murder in the 2009 overdose death of a woman.
