TYLER - Dead grass is just a sign of the times right now, and it's all over East Texas. For those looking to save what little green they have left in their yard, experts say there are several things you should do, and probably just as many, that you shouldn't.

Most people's first thought to save a dying yard is to water, so we met with local landscaper Marvin Salcido to find out more.

"Yes water's good to a point but because of how hot it is, it's going to act like a magnifying glass on that plant and it will begin to kill your plant."

In addition Salcido says most of the water during the heat for the day can evaporate quickly, so those huge water bills you're paying could be nothing. Mowing is another issue, Salcido says. If the blades trim down to low, during this heat, you could kiss your yard goodbye.

"With scalping it as hot as it is right now, your most likely going to have a big brown spot in your yard for a while."

If your grass is growing and you don't want to have a small forrest in your front yard, what do you do?

"For the grass sake I would change your mowing pattern. One week mow this way, the next week mow that way so that you don't begin to put ruts in your yard especially if your grass is dry."

Salcido says it really all comes down to planning, and he says with a little maintenance, and a little education you can go a long way to having that green garden again.
