The East Texas heat is keeping many of us indoors and it's keeping kids from being active.

Kids and weight is a hot topic because reportedly more than one-third of children in the U.S.. are overnight or obese. Experts say the heat makes kids stay indoors and not exercise.

American Journal of Public Health reports, kids are more likely to pack on the pounds during the summer.

Parents KETK spoke to agree, they tell us it is too hot outside so they let their lids stay home, watch TV and play video games.

Patricia King is a mother of two and tell us she tries to get her kids outside to stay active to maintain a healthy weight and limit indoor activities.

KETK stopped by the Boys and Girls Club of East Texas and spoke with staff about summer weight gain among kids.

"We've just lost the art of doing fun things, and so a lot kids get sedentary and they just want to sit in front of the TV," says Raychel McKelvy, Camp Director.

"We just want to make sure kids stay active because kids get bored," says Jasmine Owens, Camp Counselor.

"With the rise of modern technology in today's society it can become way for a kid to be lazy and play video games all day long," says Matthew Webb, Camp Counselor.

We're told even with this summer heat parents need to get their kids moving.

If it does not involve a computer, phone or TV you can bet kids will have nothing to do with it. They have no idea what it is to go outside and play or have chores to do.

I was in the interview and I just thought I'd say staying active is a big issue but lack of a healthy diet can be even more crucial. I weighed up to 300 at one point and was super active. I lost 100 pounds by both diet and exercise.
